Chapter Meetings The Carolinas chapter meets every other month (except July & August), on the 3rd Tuesday of the month (2nd Tuesday in November). The primary meeting location is in Charlotte NC and typically commence at 6:00pm ET. For more information on upcoming meetings, please click on the meeting link, in the “Events list” on left of this page.
Materials Expo The Carolinas Chapter also holds regular materials expo’s. These events provide our members access to exhibits and networking opportunities with various industry experts, showcasing a wide variety of different products and services. Want to see the latest in cutting edge materials, processes or applications? – then you need to attend a materials expo.

SAMPE Carolinas February 2014 Chapter Meeting

Come Visit with Us in February The SAMPE Carolinas Chapter is pleased to invite you to our first chapter meeting of 2014 on Wednesday, February 19th at 4:00 PM at the Clemson University Restoration Institute in North Charleston, SC. PLEASE NOTE NEW LOCATION FOR THIS MEETING! This will be an exciting event so you won't want to miss this! Details are below. Registration is OPEN; so please click the registration link below to make your reservation if you'd like to come. Due to the nature of this meeting and its venue we will not be able to accept walk-in registations. All attendees must pay in advance to secure their place. We will open the venue at 4:00 PM and the program will begin shortly thereafter. The cost is $40 for all attendees. The additional cost of this event is due to the need to pay for security at this get together, as well as…well…it's Charleston, so everything is more expensive.   Scheduled Presentations and Tours The program begins at 4pm with presentations by the CURI staff on CURI, the wind turbine test facility, and the Hunley restoration project. Following the program, there will be tours of the turbine test facility and the Hunley labs. We will conclude with cocktails and hors d’ouevres following the tours.   Future Events This new venue will not be a permanent meeting place for us. The Whitewater Center will remain our default home base, but we are also looking to mix things up a little. The event will be held at our usual location, the Whitewater Center in the Charlotte, NC area. This presentation will outline composite demands, challenges and trends in the wind turbine industry. Traditionally this technology was called Rapid Prototyping but with improvements in machine speed, material strength and part accuracy the systems are actually being used for manufacturing. Presently we use two Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) machines from Stratasys® and one three-dimensional printer (3DP) from ZCorporation®. We'll be discussing this and more.     Our Speaker Jeff Raquet is the Senior Lecturer & Director of the Rapid Product Realization Lab at UNC-Charlotte. Professor Jeff Raquet earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Rutgers, followed by a M.S. from the University of Memphis, then his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from UNC-Charlotte.  His thesis work focused on additive manufacturing technology, and following his matriculation, he joined the faculty of UNCC Department of Mechanical Engineering & Engineering Science.  He currently manages the "Rapid Lab" at UNCC, where additive manufacturing is used to "print" solid structures based on the input of a CAD drawing, and he also teaches classes in engineering mechanics and... read more

The cost to attend is just: $20/ person for SAMPE members $25/ person for guests or non-members $10/ person for students with a valid student ID card   Our Schedule Will Be 6:00pm – 6:30pm Cocktails 6:30pm – 6:45pm Welcome and Announcements 6:45pm – 7:15pm Dinner 7:15pm – 8:00pm Keynote 8:00pm – 8:30pm Cocktails & Adjourn   Our Keynote Doing Business with a Tier 1 Aerospace Supplier As aerospace primes focus on platform integration, they are relying more and more on Tier 1 suppliers for major assemblies and aircraft components.  Often these Tier 1 suppliers are bidding on programs that are still in development with designs not yet finalized.  That creates challenges for suppliers within the entire supply chain.  This presentation will discuss the opportunities and challenges on doing business with a Tier 1 aerospace supplier.   Having worked in the University for 9 years, Dr. Simonet makes a perfect blend of R&D to manufacturing and process definition. His presentation will focus on, “Automization of composite manufacturing for high volume automotive projects”.
